To tenderize an ingredient is to prepare it so that it is more chewable or tender. There are different ways to tenderize ingredients.
If you want to tenderize meat by hand, you can make use of a meat mallet. The mallet is used to pound the meat out so that all the meat is the same size and tender. If you do not have a meat mallet, feel free to use the back of a large pan.
Marinating food in ingredients like vinegar, wine, lemon juice, buttermilk or yoghurt will automatically tenderize it. Tenderization can also occur by using certain cooking methods. Braising, for example, is a great way to tenderize meat.
